About this deal

This story starts with a bored, retired Detective Superintendent Albert Smith and his dog Rex Harrison; who can talk, sadly no one can hear him no, matter how hard he tries. Rex is a failed police dog who has issues with obedience. To be honest, as soon as I read that I just knew that this was going to be a brilliant book! Pork Pie Pandemonium is a mystery novel and the first of the Albert Smith’s Culinary Capers series. The story follows Albert Smith, a retired detective living in England, as he takes a culinary tour around the country. His vacation is almost immediately interrupted by an incident in a pork pie cooking class he is attending. Despite the warnings of local police, Albert decides to investigate the incident himself, along with the help of his service dog, Rex Harrison, and the pie shop owner’s teenage daughter, Donna. Together, they follow the clues to solve the mystery and save the shop, all the while getting into more and more trouble. Dedication: There once was a man from Dundee who took to the town for high tea but a gust from nowhere raised his kilt in the air and solved a long-term mystery." [I couldn't resist!] Arbroath, a town in Scotland up the eastern Scottish coast northeast of Dundee, is famous for its smoked herring (smokies). Albert and Rex head there because of a photograph including the Master Gastrothief's two henchmen who met their demise in a prior episode. Although that clue didn't yield any answers, there was murder and corruption in high places which Albert was determined to solve. This book had me on the edge of my seat to find out what happened including Rex's ongoing battle with the seagulls. It was a great mystery but Albert figured it out with help from his B&B landlady and other townsfolk. The ending was a cliffhanger with another kidnapping. Meanwhile Albert & Rex arrived heading for Dundee. To deal with his inability to cook , he has decided to undertake a culinary tour of UK's better know foods with Protected Geographical Status, and learn how to make them.

Pork Pie Pandemonium is Albert Smith’s Culinary Capers series debut. Albert, the retired detective, had begun his happy retirement, but soon the wife passed away. His three children are all grown up, and police officers are worried about his health, especially his memory loss. It’s a great idea for fathers and sons to join cooking classes to learn how to make a Bakewell dessert. It’s a common topic in local conversation, and according to a certain local lady working at the B&B, it’s an offense if you are found calling the Bakewell desert by the wrong name. Albert Smith is still on his culinary trip in Britain with his snarky ex-police dog Rex Harrison. His son Randall is with him; as they travel on the second round, they find and learn how to cook different foods famous in various parts of the country. Albert's first stop is to a village famous for their pork pies. Albert's class ends abruptly when someone spots a human thumb on top of the meat destined for the pie. Albert feels bad for the teenaged Donna who is in charge of the pie factory while her mother is in the hospital with appendicitis. Now retired from the military, I live in the south-east corner of England with a pair of lazy sausage dogs. Surrounded by rolling hills, brooding castles, and vineyards, I doubt I will ever leave, the beer is just too good. One thing is for sure, what started out as a bit of fun, is getting deadlier by the hour, and they’d better work out what the dog knows soon or it could be curtains for them all. I saw the cover of this recommended book as I arrived to flat/dog sit for my daughter. Lobo and Rex Harrison may look the same but whereas Rex Harrison is an adult dog with a basic discipline, Lobo is still less than a year old with puppyish behavior. Nevertheless, I recognized similarities in behaviors and perhaps now I understand more of Lobo's thoughtful glances. I loved Albert and Rex. What a joy to welcome Albert as a senior sleuth with all his law enforcement training and experience, not ready to stay home and vegetate on the couch. Rex's commentary (not heard by humans) and annoyance at some human responses had me laughing out loud many times.

They discover all sorts of things as they look into the case including a drug sting. Albert and Rex attract the attentions of the villains and have his room at the B&B where he is staying firebombed. With lots of characters that were really funny, the story brightened up a dull old day for me. So thank you to the author for that!

Publication Order of Shunned Immortal Books

Their first stop is Agnew’s Perfect Pork Pie Emporium, where Albert has signed up with the premier pork pie maker for a class that will teach him exactly how to make their famous pork pies. However, his class is abruptly halted when a fellow student finds a human thumb atop her neat pile of pork. With the company shut down and no class to keep him occupied, Albert reverts to form and begins looking into how a severed digit ended up in the pork pie shop. Their adventure is getting deadlier with every destination, but these two sleuths are not going to be put off. With Rex’s keen sense of smell and Albert’s decades of experience as a detective, this pair are on the trail. Bedfordshire Clanger Calamity. Hysterically funny, like a Marx brothers movie, I could picture every scene: the delusional master mind behind the kidnapping and murder and his two pathetic henchmen up against Arthur's superior brain and Rex's brawn (& brain too actually). The Clanger was a revelation, another addition to the unique culinary experiments of the British Isles (reading the history and recipe at the end of the tales is always an additional treat!). Class Participant: Albert Smith, retired detective superintendent of the Metropolitan Police, accompanied by Rex Harrison, former police dog, currently assistance dog.
