The most important part of the story, for me, is to understand that whether you think you're not worthy enough, you MUST remind yourself that you ARE NOT nothing, you ARE enough, and you ARE important. This book is full of fascinating facts about all kinds of sea creatures from those near the surface to those who live down deep in the darkness. This book is his memoir of a wonderful life exploring coral reefs that began, surprisingly, in the wilds of Scotland and took shape once he began his undergraduate studies in 1980. And they weren't detailed-ly described like secular YA either so it is better than normal, but still. For me, the perspectives began to run into one another and I just never felt fully engrossed in the story.The ending was beautiful and good, but not every part of every characters story tied up in a nice bow.

Sara Ella’s impressive writing style and raw emotion makes this story stick with you long after you’ve turned the final page. His life has been rewarding, because of the new science he did, the students and colleagues he worked with, and the sheer joy he experienced diving on reefs. If it had been closer to the end of the story, I think I would have ended the book very puzzled about who was who, but thanks to the continuation, I was able to (somewhat) get it all straight. By then our impacts on coral reefs were becoming quite stark and this book does not shrink from the bad news.

The author has a very distinct writing style and characters that feel very authentic and real in their rawness. Told initially from the point of view of Coral we gradually learn about Brook, Hope and those around them. From the dazzling fish and sharks of the Great Barrier Reef to playful seals in the Galapagos, bring the scenes to life with over 170 stickers.

I know this is a young adult book, but this felt like something that would have been in a children’s book.
