About this deal

The Story of a Fierce Bad Rabbit - the first of Beatrix Potter’s books for very young children, this vignette concerns a very bad rabbit indeed, who steals a carrot, and gets his comeuppance at the hunter’s gun. Beatrix Potter was born in London in 1866. During her rather lonely childhood and later, as a young woman, she studied art and natural history. She acquired her love and knowledge of the countryside during family holidays, at first in Scotland and then in the Lake District. She started her career as children's author and illustrator in 1901 when she was thirty-five. In the years before the First World War, demand for her work was so great that she was publishing an average of two new stories a year. As she became financially independent, she was able to buy some land in the Lake District and in 1913, on her marriage to solicitor William Heelis, she moved to live there permanently. For the last thirty years of her life, writing and illustrating gave place to a second career as a sheep farmer and countryside conservationist. Re-reading for the first time in well over ten years! I actually think my copy was a present for my brother but somehow I ended up with it and - along with Winnie the Pooh - the stories are the first things I remember being able to read myself. I’m surprised by how much I remember while I’m reading them again. The Tale of Mrs Tiggy-Winkle - one of the most popular of Beatrix Potter’s creations, Mrs Tiggy-winkle is a hedgehog laundress for other animals. She is discovered washing the handkerchiefs of a farmgirl called Lucie. But is she real, or just a dream?

Helen Beatrix Potter was an English author, illustrator, mycologist, and conservationist who is best known for her children's books, which featured animal characters such as Peter Rabbit. The Tale of Pigling Bland - this story of a pig finding a soulmate reflects Beatrix Potter’s own life changes at the time. When Aunt Pettitoes sends her children away, Pigling Bland gets lost on his way to market. He is taken in by a farmer, and discovers that he intends to turn Pigling and the beautiful sow Pig-wig into bacon! Will they make their escape? Everyone has a favourite among the cast of memorable characters. Perhaps it’s Peter Rabbit, the naughty trespasser in Mr McGregor’s garden, or his cousin Benjamin Bunny? We understand that buying kids books can be expensive. Born into a wealthy household, Potter was educated by governesses and grew up isolated from other children. She had numerous pets, and through holidays in Scotland and the Lake District, developed a love of landscape, flora, and fauna, all of which she closely observed and painted. Because she was a woman, her parents discouraged intellectual development, but her study and paintings of fungi led her to be widely respected in the field of mycology.

In 1866, Beatrix Potter was born in London to Mancunian parents. She had a great interest in the natural sciences, but her career in academia was stalled. However, her detailed and accurate drawings of fungi are still admired and used today. Her children’s books grew out of the imaginative letters she sent to the children of her former governess. She wrote and drew the series from the beginning of the twentieth century until the end of World War I, when she turned her attention to sheep farming on her land in the Lake District. After her death in 1943, she left her lands to the National Trust, where they are still enjoyed by daytrippers and holidaymakers today. The Tailor of Gloucester - a tailor sends his cat Simpkin away to buy a twist of silk, to complete the mayor’s Christmas wedding waistcoat. While the cat’s away, the tailor frees the mice he has hidden under teacups. When the tailor falls ill, the mice complete the waistcoat out of gratitude for their freedom. In her thirties, Potter published the highly successful children's book The Tale of Peter Rabbit and became secretly engaged to her publisher, Norman Warne, causing a breach with her parents, who disapproved of his social status. Warne died before the wedding. Welcome to Books2Door, the one-stop shop for all your children's book needs! We specialise in selling cheap children’s box sets and series at bargain prices.Appley Dapply's Nursery Rhymes - Beatrix Potter loved nursery rhymes, and planned a collection of them as the follow-up to The Tale of Peter Rabbit. However, after her editor and fiancé Norman Warne died in 1905, the project was set aside. When her publisher faced financial ruin in 1917, the book was resurrected, and remains a classic for the very young.
