I’m also hoping to do some primary-text readings, so if there’s anything you’d like to read or discuss that’s even tangentially related to the subject matter of Kenny’s book, we can make a discussion post for it when it comes up. Anthony Kenny's new translation is accompanied by associated material from Plato, Sir Philip Sidney, P. Widely considered to be one of the most thorough and accessible historical reviews in philosophy, An Illustrated Brief History of Western Philosophy has earned an estimable and distinctive reputation, both for the compelling writing style of Anthony Kenny, one of the most respected and accomplished living philosophers, and for the rich collection of paintings, illustrations, maps, and photos included with every chapter to complement this review of 2,500 years of philosophical thought. During the 2000s Kenny wrote a history of Western philosophy, released in four parts from 2004 to 2007; the four books were released together as A New History of Western Philosophy in 2010. In the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, Hegel, Mill, Nietzsche, Freud, and Wittgenstein again transformed the way we see the world.Although his two-sections treatment may not be the most desirable approach, his concrete introduction surely gives readers a very solid understanding on the Western philosophy. Tell us why you liked or disliked the book; using examples and comparisons is a great way to do this.

Now these four splendid books have been combined into one magnificent volume, providing a continuous sweeping account of the great thought of the Western world. This is the first of four volumes in which he unfolds a magisterial new history of Western philosophy. This is exemplified in the beginnings of sixteenth century "thought control" and the consequent first attempts to define "free will" (of Molina) as "liberty of indifference" (p. An academic scholar will find the work too simplistic while a casual reader will find it much too difficult to handle. I can see the value it has for what it tries to do, and maybe someone finds it worth their time to read this thing in one go/ or as an addition to their readings of a particular period/ philosopher.Kenny explains how Plato founded the Theory of Ideas, especially the Idea of the Good, and consequently, founded a theory of knowledge. I would recommend it to anyone curious about philosophy, but who has enough patience to finish a long read. If you are interested in a genuine history of Western Philosophy that does its best to treat all past thinkers with their due dignity, this is the best I've found.
