About this deal

I want my table top to be 1800mm long by 800mm wide, and here I'm measuring and marking up so that I can cut it to size - obviously I'm making sure to work from my square reference corner of the sheet. Peter is one of those people who is confident in what he does but what he designs and what he says makes perfect sense. Hold the square up to the edge, scribe a line, and then flip the square over, scribe another line, and if your square is square, those lines should be exactly the same distance away from one another. I was watching the chap who designed the system's you tube on how to set it up and make your own boards. I'm not entirely sure right now if that's going to be ok with the accessories I use in future so I may end up removing and re-installing the braces based on the dimensions from my drawing but at this stage I've never even used an MFT table so I'll give it some time and see how it goes.

The main piece of advice I would give to anyone planning to make their own top is to apply the finish before drilling/routing the holes. Woodpeckers took 2 new Festool MFTs and an old Festool MFT and measured all three of them on their vision system. Although their tops are obviously manufactured to a tight tolerance using CNC and work well for tons of us, if using as a pattern your can only create what the pattern will allow. Continue plunging every 96 mm to complete the first row, a total of 11 holes to duplicate an MFT/3 top.

So I had two options, I could either try to remove and then move those bracing pieces - taking the screws out and hitting them with a hammer to try to break the glue joints. I decide to mitre the corners, just to make it look nice, and then I glued and clamped the pieces in place to force the wood back to being straight, and I used a few pin nails too, and I made sure to fire the nails in as low as possible because later on I want to add a round over to the top of the trim. As I said, I’ve had very good results with the Festool 20 mm bit in my OF 1400 using the LR-32 system.

I chose 4mm because that's what the shaft of my awl measures, and that's important for reasons that will become apparent a little bit later on in the video. I made this simple jig based off an existing top with extreme care and it works very well to duplicate hole patterns. Using the LR32, align the LR32's holey rail so that the center of the first hole will be 71 mm from the short edge and 71 mm from the long edge. Keep in mind that when using a 'pattern' router bit (the bearing is at the top, closest to the router) some manufacturers slightly undersize the cutter diameter compared to the bearing diameter so that the 'pattern' does not cut each time. In this video I'll be making an MFT style top without using a CNC or any expensive specialist jigs or guide systems - just using some basic tools that you probably already have, and a home made jig.

If all you want is a hole pattern for clamping and not for accurate layout, you can use any number of inexpensive jigs or the old MFT top itself. If you’re into woodworking and you like the idea of a track saw (plunge saw with a guide rail), then you must have looked at a Festool MFT. So I loosened the bolt, squared up the table, and tightened it again, and then it looked much better.

The knife mark is difficult to see in this footage, so I used my pencil just to highlight it for the camera. Quote from: sandy on January 11, 2020, 06:49 PM Festool 491072 is the one that I use, without any problems. And you can make them in whatever shape and size you need and can even create customised hole layouts including isometric patterns if required (see Peter Parfitt's videos for demos of this). To remedy this, I used the included stop collar to only drill the holes about 9/10 of the way through, then flipped the piece over and finished boring out the holes from the other side.
