For want of a better term, what you hear with your ears when recording is more or less what you get on this Zoom. It’s actually quite odd how much better the battery life of the H5 is since they both use 2 AA’s and use the same type of screen. Because the onboard mics are configured for stereo, your four-track options can seem limited, but you could bypass them using the mini‑jack input and a splitter cable for a pair of battery-powered mono mics.

Really impressive sound results in terms of just how much detail, clarity, dynamic range and frequency range there is.With onboard X/Y microphones, two combo input jacks, overdubbing, effects, and more, the H4n Pro is packed with features that allows musicians to create songs from start to finish. It wouldn't be my first choice as a hardware interface (this is, after all, designed with location recording applications in mind) but it's certainly very usable. I appreciate the ability to interchange mic recording systems and the ability to record up to four tracks at once.

Speaking of SD cards, one of my least favorite things is waiting for my Zoom H5 to format a partially full SD card. Capture two seconds* of audio before you hit RECORD with the Pre-Record function and never miss the start of a great take. Not only does it have a solid look/feel, the size is reasonable, and the resulting sound/recordings are well within my expectations. Zoom loaded the H4n Pro with features that make it ideal for recording film production sound and sound effects.

The H4N is justifiably a little pricier than its H‑series predecessors, given the improvements that have been made, but although there's a lot of 'bonus' functionality I can't imagine using, you're not paying a premium for it. The onboard XY microphones capture a stunning stereo image, and two combo input jacks let you use your favorite mics as well. Monitoring audio levels from various miss as well as the ability to be used as an audio interface is a great tool. Plus the Zoom formats the SD card with it's own proprietary format, so not a case of simply pulling the SD car out and sticking it into the iMac.

The improved noise floor (-120 dBu EIN) captures audio at lower volumes with less noise and fewer artifacts.
