About this deal

TC001 is not compatible with all styles of phone cases or tablet cases, the included extension cable may need to be used. For the most part, the best thermal-imaging cameras work like regular ones, except that the image sensor detects invisible IR light and it is translated to a visual “thermogram”. This is what you see through the creature’s perspective views in The Predator and Prey.

Although there are several of us on the team, including me (Adam Juniper), we generally test thermal cameras by using them in day-to-day tasks like inspecting ventilation/insulation, heating equipment (radiators, boilers) and plumbing (hot water pipes and taps). We also test any special claims made by the manufacturer about individual products, as well as the overall experience. A high thermal sensitivity of 0.05℃ allows the TC004 to distinguish between tiny temperature differences. The user interface of the TC001 app is simple and easy to use. You get four large tiles corresponding to the four sections of the app:Professional analysis software allows users to easily save and share diagnostic data on a PC. The TC004 also supports screen projection on a PC as well.

Thermal imaging company Hti-Xintai produce all sorts of clever IR devices, from phone plug-in cameras to a very cool-looking thermal monocular. The HTI-19 is a handheld thermal imaging camera that shows off some excellent features. In fact, it’s the best thermal imaging camera in terms of IR resolution on my list. Designed with mobility in mind, the TC001 can easily pair with most Android smartphones; the device only weighs 30g, and measures 71x42x14mm; further adding to the TC001’s mobility.

What I like

Apart from taking images, the TC001 also allows you to record videos. The advantage of TC001 in this regard is its frame rate of 25Hz. The videos are smooth without any stuttering.

Combined with its 15Hz refresh rate (many are only 9Hz), it can easily be used to spot animals or people in the dark, or through dense foliage. There’s also a 300-lumen LED light, should you want to surprise someone you’ve spotted in the dark. The simple menu system provides access to other useful features too, such as Level and Span adjustments (a little like manual exposure, allowing you to isolate a thermal range), and Emissivity adjustments (manual or pre-sets). I did mention in the intro that at the moment, there is only a USB-C option, but I am fairly sure they will release a version for the iPhone as well – maybe they’re just waiting to see if Apple will actually accept defeat and move to the USB-C standard, like everyone else. Also, the case is covered by a blue matte finish and no other color is currently available. The Installation I am not sure it works that well to be honest, but I suppose that it’s better than nothing. Lastly, you can manually select the temperature range or simply let the camera recognize the correct range by itself. Apparently, the reason for that is the continuous calibration of the sensors and it seems to be normal for module-type thermal cameras. Now let’s talk about the accuracy of the temperature. Topdon says that the maximum temperature variance can be 2 degrees C, down to 0.1 C, while the potential thermal error should be less than 1.8 F if the target temperature is below 212 degrees F. I didn’t have an instrument which I could trust to be perfectly accurate, just the AGM Glory Pro to compare its results. Left: AGM Glory Pro. Right: TC001.Both versions have a 3-inch touchscreen and can store around 500 images onboard to transfer via Micro USB. The ability to type notes via a touch keyboard can be handy, too. If you can stretch to it, the FLIR C5 model adds more analysis features and Wi-Fi so you can get images to your phone and to your software. The FLIR C3-X and FLIR C5 are good-looking compact thermal imagers that are well suited to DIYers and contractors. With a rugged body that’ll survive a bit of workplace rough-and-tumble, both have two cameras and a 5-megapixel optical lens. The IR maxes out at 160 x 120 on the pricier C5, allowing it to take advantage of Flir’s MSX technology. This patented method uses an edge-detection algorithm on the higher-resolution visual light image, overlaying this with the IR image to make the picture easier to comprehend.

Featuring a DIY temperature range ability, the TOPDON infrared thermal camera allows users to set upper and lower limits, and corresponding colors.

The thermal camera sensor used by the Topdon TC001 has a pixel size of 12μm and a resolution of 256×192 pixels which is higher than the 160x120p resolution of the FLIR One Pro and a bit better than the 206 x 156 pixels of the SEEK Compact. It’s interesting to see that the AGM Glory Pro thermal camera supports the same exact resolution and I do have it available for a comparison. But before that, I also need to mention the 25Hz which goes beyond the 9Hz limit of both the FLIR One Pro and the SEEK Compact, but it’s the same as on the Glory Pro. NETD of this high-precision infrared sensor is less than 40mK and thermal imaging resolution displays down to 0.1℃. The tool's margin of error is less than 2%. This is to ensure the upmost accurate thermal readings. I tested a wide range of temperatures, up to about 185 degrees Celsius on our stove, as shown above. I was impressed with the accuracy, speed, and resolution of the TOPDON TC001 Thermal Camera. The TC004 features a wide temperature measurement range of -20℃ - +350℃. It can also measure temperatures with ±2℃ accuracy for precise temperature measurements. Below are some photos we took during the testing of various thermal imaging cameras. As you can see, the camera clearly displays multiple measurements (actual, min and max) along with clear colour visuals of hot and cold spots.
