About this deal

A rowing boat, accompanied by a number of words associated with the Olympic movement, with the London 2012 logo above and the denomination 50 PENCE below. The 50p coin design features the outline of a contestant in a squatting position ready to perform their lift with their heavy barbell. Credit: The Royal Mint Wheelchair Rugby 50p A fleur-de-lis, superimposed over a globe and surrounded by the inscription BE PREPARED, the dates 1907 and 2007, and the denomination FIFTY PENCE. A montage of the three sports that form the Triathlon, with the London 2012 logo above and the denomination 50 PENCE below. A design showing the pagoda, encircled by a vine and accompanied by the dates 1759 and 2009, with the word KEW at the base of the pagoda.

The Aquatics coin was redesigned to make the swimmer’s face more visible, but not before around 600 coins showing the original design were entered into circulation… cue the big coin hunt! On the rare version, the wavy lines representing the water are seen crossing in front of the swimmer’s face, whilst the more common coin has the face at the front making it much clearer.

The reverse design simply reads ‘Peace, prosperity and friendship with all nations’ as a symbol of respect to the remaining nations within the EU. Credit: The Royal Mint Volleyball 50p The rare Olympic 50p Coins in UK general circulation are topped by the Offside Rule Football 50p with only 1.1 million coins minted. Each coin had a different designer. Only Natasha Ratcliffe (handball and wheelchair rugby) and Jonathan Olliffe (aquatics and gymnastics) had the honour of designing two coins each. They are not proof coins, they are uncirculated coins - they would have been made by a much larger machine and therefore, they would not have set up a large machine just to produce 600,' said Mussell. This clever coin explains the offside rule very simply and has become one of the rarer Olympics 50p coins. This is in part due to the lower mintage and also because of the unusual design; any design that has an obvious talking point is more likely to be retained by the public, perhaps by those wanting to explain the offside rule to their friends once and for all! Team GB finished top of the medal table for Equestrian events, with 5 medals in total, 3 of which were gold. A representation of a table on which are placed twelve stars, linked by a network of lines to each other and also to twelve chairs around the table, on one of which appear the letters UK, and with the dates 1992 and 1993 above and the value 50 PENCE below.
