Emma Chichester Clark (1955 - ) is a British author and illustrator. Emma always knew she wanted to draw, and began making picture books with sewn-up spines when she was 5-years-old. As a young adult, she was taught by the illustrator Quentin Blake, and wrote her first picture book in 1987. This simple story with water-colored illustrations teaches us the impact pollution has on the ocean and its inhabitants. Seeing a whale’s stomach full of colorful plastic bags made my own stomach turn as I think of the thousands that must be floating along in the ocean. Since they look like jellyfish, the whales eat them and then find they are in trouble. No matter if you live near an ocean or in the middle of nowhere, the plastics that we discard can still find their way into streams, rivers, lakes, and oceans. We are all contributing to the problem and we can all be part of the solution. It’s World Blood Cancer Day & 500 pubs and bars are making their mark by supporting ‘Pinkspiration Week’ Ann O’Leary, Head of Register Development at the blood cancer charity Anthony Nolan, said: “Saving the lives of people with blood cancer is a truly global effort, as countries all over the world work together to find stem cell matches for people in need of a transplant.

Although the story or the illustrations didn't blow me away, I loved that this was about a child caring about what is happening in the ocean. A boy meets a whale who is full of plastic bags. He decides to speak out about what is happening to the ocean and the sea creatures. To help save and improve lives by educating, inspiring and motivating people, especially from ethnically diverse communities, to register as blood, organ, stem cell and bone marrow donors and to provide a range of support to families caring for child cancer patients.

The latest version of Margot’s favourite book “I love you, Blue Kangaroo!” is now in the shops and available online… The text is simple and easy to read, but the message is critical. Our oceans are dying and the young will inherit this planet. They must learn to care for it and protect it. This books is a wonderful way to introduce this concept of saving the whales and the oceans, caring for the environment, cleaning up beaches, reducing plastic waste and instilling a deep love for the sea. If necessary you could introduce the idea by using the orange/green/red spy glass to look for orange/green/red things in the room/in a storybook etc. This would also be a way to include younger or less able children in a mixed learning group.
