About this deal

Delord 25 Year Old Bas-Armagnac is distilled from Ugni-Blanc, Baco, Folle-Blanche and Colombard grapes.

Armagnac- Majestic Wine

Today, only a handful of producers still cultivate Colombard or Folle blanche, among several permitted varieties, to produce Cognac.Armagnac is a unique French brandy that is only produced in the Armagnac region in southwest France. We're also full of less relevant but just as useful facts, just like this one: Dolly the Sheep was born in 1996, too. Previously, Delord had only released Armagnac at 40% ABV - so we're rather excited to see the difference that the additional strength imparts.

Cognac and Armagnac The 4 differences between Cognac and Armagnac

Château de Laubade, XO, Bas Armagnac, 40% ABV, 750 ml offers up intense notes of orange peel/marmalade, peach, apricot, toasted bread, dried and fresh herbs, and dried fruit, along with notes of cinnamon, chili pepper, other wood spices and a touch of savoriness. After decades in wood, the best Armagnac develops a character known as ‘rancio’ with notes of dried apricot, pineapple and walnuts. This is a lively brandy, with notes of caramel, toffee and burned sugar upfront, with some smooth vanilla notes and a hint of acidity with a touch of lemon and a little spice. It is distilled from wine usually made from a blend of grapes including Baco 22A, Colombard, Folle blanche and Ugni blanc, traditionally using column stills rather than the pot stills used in the production of cognac, which is made predominantly from ugni blanc grapes. The house of Delord was established in 1893, so this 1993 vintage was produced in its centenary year! Then there is the tiny Haut-Armagnac, the high ground, up to about 200 metres above sea level, with mainly chalky soils which produce a rare delicate and fruity spirit.

Armin and Rémy remain strongly attached to the production of Armagnac which covers about 10% of the family-owned vineyards. The finish is exceptionally long and flavorful with lingering dried fruit notes and a bit of pepperiness. Traditionally, Armagnac was aged in local oak though nowadays barrels might come from further north in France. Baco 22A, also known as Baco blanc, is one of just a handful of hybrid grape varieties whose cultivation to produce spirts is still allowed under EU regulations.

This year, the Grassa family is celebrating the 30th anniversary of its partnership with Waitrose with its Bas-Armagnac XO. Founded by restauranteur Francis Darroze, the company sources its armagnac from small estates and producers, before ageing it in its own cellars. As with Cognac, Armagnac began to assume something like its present form in the 17th and 18th century when merchants discovered the effects of ageing in oak on the local spirit.

Best armagnacs to replace your favourite cognac | The Independent

Lush and sweet but never overbearing as the finish approaches, this is an iconic (yet reasonably affordable) example of armagnac at its best. It’s also noticeably hotter on the tongue, though it’s still quite gentle, which helps to focus one’s attention on the bigger, brighter florals in the mix.

Very fruity on the nose with aromas of floral potpourri, stone and tropical fruits, along with candied orange zest, prune, milk chocolate and a bit of walnut. Armagnac producer Chateau de Laubade got its start in 1870 in Gascony, and today it farms 260 acres of grapes used for its brandies. The Château is owned by the Boisseson family, Armagnac producers for more than 10 generations—this is the oldest family-owned producer in Armagnac.
