About this deal

If you are in the North America, look out for US/Canadian flag icons on popular product listings for direct links. James Gilbert wanted Bates as Blamire because of his reputation as a comedy actor, and Bates loved the role. Clarke, who initially saw Owen as an archetypal cockney who could not play as solid a northern character as Compo was meant to be, recognised Owen's potential only after going to London for a read-through with him. Toby is beginning to realise that the benefits of going back to his ex-wife far outweigh the advantages of living alone in a sparsely furnished house with no-one to cook or clean for him.

An effort had gone into re-creating the period, most effectively, and the boys’ concerns in their youth echoed the early series in being more directly connected to real concerns: and with war looming, especially over the second series, First of the Summer Wine dealt with a more pressing reality. The Comedy Playhouse pilot and all episodes of the first series were produced and directed by James Gilbert.Jane Freeman seized her brief opportunity to look and sound soft, saying that they never had any babies. The show at this point is an agglomeration of sniping, one at another, over their attitudes to life. Compo and Clegg tagged along, watching Foggy get himself (and them) into awkward and silly situations. Brian Wilde left again, to be replaced by Frank Thornton, as Retired Detective Inspector Herbert Truelove, aka Truly of the Yard. Roy Clarke, however, stated that he was fully aware this was the last series, and preferred the show to have a quiet ending.

The trio hang around the Library, reading the papers, observing the would-be passionate romance between the Marxist Librarian ‘Bloody’ Wainwright (Blake Butler), and his assistant, Mrs Partridge (Rosemary Martin), whose eagerness to conduct an illicit affair is very much tempered by her fear of her neglectful husband no longer being the only person in Holmfirth who doesn’t know about it, oh, and whether her back would let her do that. The announcement today that Peter Sallis has died at the age of 96 finally rings down the curtain on the Last of the Summer Wine era. When Bates dropped out due to illness in 1976 after two series, the role of the third man of the trio was filled in various years up to the 30th series by the quirky war veteran Walter C "Foggy" Dewhurst ( Brian Wilde) (who had two lengthy stints), the eccentric inventor and ex-headmaster Seymour Utterthwaite ( Michael Aldridge), and former police officer Herbert "Truly of The Yard" Truelove ( Frank Thornton). All 13 episodes from the first two series of Roy Clarke's popular comedy set in the Yorkshire Dales. The episodes were filmed and then shown to preview audiences, whose laughter was recorded and then mixed into each episode's soundtrack to provide a laugh track and avoid the use of canned laughter. The harmonica, the melody that attracted me then and which still tickles my nostalgia, was the least important factor in the track’s success. They were primarily passive characters, reacting to what they saw around them, but not driving the story, and that could not have been continued for long. Note: Our refurbished grades - Pristine, Very Good and Good - are solely based on the cosmetic condition of the phone. Each of these recurring characters contributed their own running jokes and subplots to the show, often becoming reluctantly involved in the schemes of the trio, or on occasion having their own, separate storylines. Once the sequence played through, once Tom Owen had arrived to play the role of his father’s son (this would not work though the younger Owen stayed with the series), I drifted away again.
