I liked the plot and found it really intriguing, but the engagement of the story in itself was something for which I could not compensate on my own. And then came the basic elements of the novella: a group of neighbors who live in Charlottesville, in a near-future time of environmental and social unraveling, experience an exaggerated version of August 12, 2017, where they’re forced from their homes and have to flee.

This collection represents Africans in diaspora, as well as African Americans and shows the variation in Black American experience. Control Negro, my favorite short story, describes an experiment by a Black professor who uses his own son to determine the presence or absence of racial prejudice. When I first wrote “My Monticello,” it was maybe a year out from August 12, 2017 and a lot of things hadn’t happened yet.
