About this deal

The suction level can be regulated with an easy to use dial. Use the high speed for floors and low speed for carpet. Deep pile rugs, however, can use something in the middle. The Shark Vacuum for you really depends on your needs. If you need power and are okay using a cord, the best corded ones here are going to be the most powerful options as tethered options typically are more robust. Shark on the whole is a bit cheaper than Dyson so if you’re on a budget, you’ll probably want to consider Shark. Both brands are very good when it comes to suction power, but Dysons generally come out ahead with battery life and weight. What are shark vacuums best at?

Cylinder vacuum cleaners can be used on different surfaces, such as carpet, laminate, lino and hardwood flooring. And they're lightweight, so it's easy to move them from one room to the next. They're also quieter than their upright cousins. Brands You Can Trust Cylinder vacuums can be bagged or bagless and the vast majority run on mains power. Are cylinder vacuums better than upright vacuums?

1. Best overall cylinder vacuum cleaner: Henry Bagged Corded Cylinder Vacuum Cleaner

This surprisingly lightweight cylinder vacuum cleaner has a powerful suction, which can be adjusted according to the floor type via a foot pedal. A generous cord length means you can enjoy a bit more freedom and an adjustable telescopic wand allows you extra reach, taking the strain out of vacuuming the stairs and those other hard-to-reach places. Well, we couldn’t ignore Henry’s punchy little cousin, could we? Henry Pet Pro has a penchant for pet hair and effortlessly gobbles up mess left behind by even the dirtiest of dogs. This vac also does the business when it comes to long human hair too. When you aren’t looking for a lot of bells and whistles and simply want a bagless vacuum that works great, then look no further than the Zanussi AirSpeed Lite. It’s got superb suction and is 890W because the EU has a law which prohibits vacuums from using more power than that. Our top-rated corded vacuum at this moment in time is the Numatic Henry HVR160, and it's a similar family-sized, multi-feature buy to this Shark vacuum. Those who really need a huge capacity should head straight for the Henry, as it has an incredible six-litre tank, and it is adept for handling jobs like DIY clean-ups that involve bigger pieces of debris. For more casual vacuumers, I think that there's a strong argument that this Shark model is more appealing, as it is a lot lighter to manoeuvre, and it has an excellent user experience with the touchscreen control panel.

Bagged/bagless: Bagless | Capacity: 1.6 litres | Weight: 7.7kg | Run time: N/A | Charging time: N/A | Included tools: Turbine head, tangle-free turbine tool, combination tool, stair tool What we like While raw performance provides an indication of cleaning power, my real-world tests show how well a cleaner actually does. I put the CZ500UKT through my standard tests, starting out with my carpet test. Sprinkling a teaspoon of flour onto the carpet, I ran the cleaner through on Standard power. As you can see, there’s a clean sweep with sharp edges right through the middle of the mess. I love Miele vacuum cleaners, I don’t think they get enough attention, they’re tested to the absolute highest standards to the equivalent of 10 times a week for 20 years so you know you’re getting a terrific vacuum that’s built to last. Which is more than you can say for the Shark cordless vacuum cleaners which are expected to have a much shorter shelf life. You shouldn’t have to lift the CZ500UKT too often, though, since you’ll mostly be pulling the body around with you on its four wheels, cleaning with the DuoClean floor head. Bagged/bagless: Bagged | Capacity: 9 litres | Weight: 8 kg | Run time: N/A | Charging time: N/A | Included tools: combi floor tool, Airobrush 270 for deep-cleaning carpets and large areas, Airobrush 14 for stairs, upholstery and smaller areas, crevice tool, dusting tool, brush and mattress tool What we like

The canister alone measures 19.3 x 10.2 x 10.2 inches/49 x 26 x 26cm (h x w x d), which is a fairly standard size, with it sufficiently compact to balance on the stairs for cleaning them. At 9lb/ 4.4kg without the hose or floorhead, it’s also light enough for most people to carry with ease. The only downside that I can see is that there are some models whose chambers are not the easiest to open and dispose of. But, the same could be said for the bagged vacuums, too. I recently bought this one. It is small and light but very powerful. I love it..” Rated by Mumsnetter ApolloandDaphne Our verdict

Not only does it not lose suction during cleaning no matter what you’re vacuuming up, but its bin can be lined with any bag so that you can easily dispose of the remnants without having to touch or handle them. And, when you’re done, just vacuum up a cup of water to clean out the hose and bin. But the part I love the most is that it comes with the anti-hair wrap head which stops hair getting tangled around it, between my wife and my dog I’d end up having to flip up our upright vacuum at least once a month to cut away all the hair so it can still vacuum properly. Bagged/bagless: Bagless | Capacity: 2 litres | Weight: 11.1kg | Run time: N/A | Charging time: N/A | Included tools: Turbo brush, dusting brush, upholstery nozzle, crevice nozzle What we like Dysons are expensive but I think they are excellent value for money and of all the hoovers I have had over the years the Dyson suction is second to none.” Brand recommended by Mumsnetter Flute56 Our verdict Pipping the Henry Pet Pro to the title of best cylinder vacuum cleaner for pet hair is the Miele 12031880 Complete C3 Cat & Dog Bagged Cylinder Vacuum Cleaner. It’s a powerful cylinder vac with good suction and a handy range of tools for removing pet hair from your carpets and upholstery. The Miele Cat & Dog’s charcoal Active AirClean filtration system works with the Miele HyClean 3D dust bag to absorb odours and allergens around your home.

Other Bagless Vacuum Cleaner Reviews

Since Shark’s lineup of vacuums, unlike Dyson’s, is so varied, there’s no one category that rises above the others. The cordless models are fully featured and do great work for day-to-day cleaning while corded canister models are great for deep cleaning. And, though not as extensive as iRobot, Shark robot vacuums are pretty adept for a more hands-free approach. However some cylinder vacs are on the bulky side (looking at you, Henry) which may make them harder to manoeuvre and store than a traditional, upright vacuum. In terms of suction and power, cylinders can more than hold their own against uprights. How to choose the best cylinder vacuum cleaner
