About this deal

I get it, the strategy one is supposed to have with regard to a single-wall tent is that condensation should be headed off before it ever accumulates. This can have to do with big picture considerations like whether you’re camping in humid environments and precisely where you decide to pitch, to more micro habits, like whether you’ve taken a lot of wet gear inside. The main defense is that well-designed tents provide for substantial ventilation. There’s a zipper that connects the two half-front doors, which you close above the front guyline. Each door has a small webbing loop at its base which you can connect to a prusik knot that travels along the front guyline. This lets you tension the doors down or up, or connect one to the guyline and not the other.

The Lunar Solo's distinctive low hexagonal shape easily spills the wind no matter the direction. Short, steeply sloped sides, handle snow or high winds with ease. A generous canopy covers a 2.4 sq. m sleeping area plus 0.8 sq. m of vestibule storage. The 49" peak height, set in the middle of the tent maximizes room for sitting and taking care of chores. First, this isn’t going to be the lightest shelter for a single wall. You’re going to be giving up 10 oz. But, it’s bomb proof in storms, although doesn’t carry or shed snow all that well. Typically you’ll need to tension the guy lines at least twice, three times in rain, giving 20-30 mins in between. But all Sylnylon has this issue.Single-person tents have a terrible but well-deserved reputation for being uncomfortably snug. If you’re tall, you may have an even harder time finding a tent you can sit upright in. Additionally, most bivvies are single-wall creatures, but this is a double-wall beauty, which enhances the versatility. The canopy and floor of the Scout are constructed with 190T Polyester. Since this fabric is used in literally millions of tents, it is very cost effective. Incorporating Polyester fabric into the Scoutmakes it the most affordable ultralight tent on the market today. waterproof? I was able to test the Lunar Solo out in the rain, and overall I was satisfied with how it held up. For the most part I was kept dry, but I did notice the occasional rain drop seeping through and landing on my forehead while I was lying down. This was not the end of the world, but I don’t feel it is 100% waterproof. Would I trust it in an intense heavy downpour for hours and hours on end? Hard to say. That is still to be determined. This would be a perfect tent for thru-hiking the PCT or Arizona Trail, but the Appalachian Trail? As we alluded to, it’s hard to say whether this is a tarp or a tent but rather a blending of the two concepts. It features a single skin silicon coated polyester upper that’s suspended off a trekking pole (or the bespoke pole that SMD make) and pegged down at the edges and corners to form a hexagonal shape around its base, the floor then hangs down from the upper, suspended around the edges by ‘noseeum’ mesh – the idea being maximum ventilation but also a bug-free sleep. The sleeping area is large, with a 1.2m height (ideal sitting up height) and 2.4 square metres of sleeping space. There’s then also a 0.8 square metres of porch space, so all in all, a lot of room to cook and faff about with your kit in. With single skin tents, you definitely want that, as it makes it far easier to avoid touching the normally damp sides.

Optimized Sleeping Area is oriented to maximize usable space, ventilation, and view. A peak height of 48 inches gives you plenty of headroom. Without a doubt, this means that the tent isn’t going to provide as much warmth, so you need to make sure you’re getting enough of that from the rest of your sleep system. And still, if the air is humid enough or it’s raining out, the build-up of condensation is inevitable. The Big Agnes Tiger Wall is a semi-freestanding, three-season tent with an easy breezy weight of just over two pounds.Off-set poles and canopy crossbar provides a very roomy interior. The Skyscape Trekker feels more spacious than the larger Lunar Solo. On one of our test trips, Miles was using the superficially similar Mountain Laurel Designs Solomid XL, which he went on to review. We therefore got to see the Solomid XL and the Lunar Solo side-by-side over a number of nights and, while I won’t speak for Miles, my impression was that the Lunar Solo took significantly fewer steps to set up since the floor and mesh elements are integrated with the tent body. Of course, that means that you can’t use the Lunar Solo as just the pyramid outer skin. To me, that’s an acceptable limitation of the Lunar Solo in exchange for a pitch that can be ready to sleep in after a handful of minutes, though, as I’ll return to in a moment, it takes practice to get to that point. It seemed that Miles had to tweak and fiddle with the removable inner elements of the Solomid a fair bit. I’m not judging his considerable campcraft, it appeared to be a difference intrinsic to the two differing approaches of the two tents. Single Wall The Lunar Solar can be set up in under two minutes (with a little practice). The adjustable tension cords on each guy line make it easy to get a solid pitch, The easy tensioning adjustment keeps your tent taut without too much moving stakes or geometry. Durability

Additional testing included a short trip to Yellowstone National Park, a trip in the subalpine high-country of the Bitterroot National Forest, and a three-day trek in the Pioneer Mountains of Montana. The Plex Solo requires one trekking pole for setup, and the maximum peak height is a whopping 52 inches.
