The ultimate must-read of 2015! The astonishing, breathtaking plot twist still resonates 3 months on– Hayleigh A suspenseful, professional-grade north country procedural whose heroine, a deft mix of compassion and attitude, would be welcome to return and tie up the gaping loose end Box leaves. The unrelenting cold makes this the perfect beach read. Best book I’ve read this year, incredible story with a double twist, amazing, unforgettable and brilliant. You must read it– KD Slowly, Jenna begins to glimpse the potential for happiness in her future. But her past is about to catch up with her, and the consequences will be devastating . . .” Goodreads What I Loved About ItHow does theauthor pull the wool over the reader's eyes in preparation for the first major twist? Gripping thriller. Clever twist. Brilliantly plotted . . . Easily best book of the last 5 years. Amazing– Barry It’s hard to rave about this book without revealing anything. But let’s just say that I literally shrieked when I reached Part 2. And I’m the kinda person who has a resting bitch face, even while writing ‘haha’ or ‘LOL’ on social media. I love that there was such a major twist early on in the book. It made it impossible for me to put the book down. On a rainy afternoon, a mother's life is shattered as her son slips from her grip and runs into the street ... Another sweltering month in Charlotte, another boatload of mysteries past and present for overworked, overstressed forensic anthropologist Temperance Brennan. From the beginning the story pulled at my heart strings. I am not a mother but one of my biggest fears is seeing someone I love get killed in a hit-and-run. From there I became more and more interested in the book. One strange thing that I loved, as much as the storyline itself, was what Jenna started doing for a living. It’s not a huge spoiler, but I won’t reveal it. It put a huge smile on my face and made me love the book even more.

McDermid, who joins a venerable list of previous winners including Ruth Rendell, PD James and Colin Dexter, called it “an honour and a thrill”. The community of writers and readers at [the festival] is unlike any other in its warmth and generosity and so this means a huge amount to me,” McDermid said. “This year sees the publication of my 30th novel and I can’t think of a better way to celebrate that.” In a split second, Jenna Gray’s world is shattered. Her only hope of moving on is to walk away from everything she knows to start afresh. Desperate to escape her past, Jenna moves to a remote cottage on the Welsh coast, but she is haunted by her fears, her grief and her memories of the cruel November night that changed her life for ever. Crime novelist Val McDermid was also a winner, presented with an award for her outstanding contribution to the genre. McDermid is most noted for creating the Tony Hill and Carol Jordan series, which was adapted as the TV drama Wire in the Blood, and for her characters journalist Lindsay Gordon and the private investigator Kate Brannigan. You clever boy," she says, stopping to kiss him fiercely on his damp forehead. "Will you show me when you get home?"My top book of the last 5 years, twisty, turny, impossible to put down, stays with you. HIGHLY recommended– Catherine DI Ray Stevens is tasked with seeking justice for a mother who is living every parent’s worst nightmare. Determined to get to the bottom of the case, it begins to consume him as he puts both his professional and personal life on the line. As Ray and his team seek to uncover the truth, Jenna, slowly, begins to glimpse the potential for happiness in her future. But her past is about to catch up with her, and the consequences will be devastating . . .
