Each character has purpose in exploring death; they relive their mistakes, cruelly imprisoned by memories discovered as their hearts stopped. Yet, they argue among each other about doing it again, daring to go longer despite the lessened chance of recovery. In the end, Flatliners is a film with a solid cast and a great premise, but it never fully delivers on the promise of its high concept. However, it has become somewhat of a cult film, so if you’re one of those folks who enjoy it, you’ll likely want this new 4K Ultra HD release from Arrow Video, which continues to do for minor classics what Criterion has done for major ones.unnatural in tone, but not necessarily to a distracting or otherwise debilitating level. There may be some who don't like a perceived minimizing of shadow detail since this is so much darker than the original Sony release, but I First AD John Kretchmer reflects on his time on this film in the segment Hereafter (2022, 14 minutes). He begins with the story of how he got into the film business and explains what an AD does. He goes on to share his memories of Schumacher and de Bont and some of the difficult shots they achieved. Other topics include shooting in Chicago ahead of winter, his enthusiasm for the script and memories of how the director worked with his cast and crew to get exactly what he wanted. He admits it was a difficult shoot but is proud of the results. There is a surprisingly small photo gallery (13 images) consisting of publicity shots and production stills.

The early 90’s wasn’t a great time to be a horror fan. As least here the filmmaker tried to attempt something new. While he didn’t fully succeed, it still managed to be an entertaining be of escapism. Regardless, Flatliners is a film that gets better with age because it’s more about the “what if” than the “what is.” Joel Schumacher’s sure-handed direction gives the film a unique quality that the other ghostly-themed films released in that era don’t really have. Critics were a little split on it when it was released, but based upon the strength of the cast and the premise, it did quite well at the box office. It was remade in 2015, which failed upon release, but saw Kiefer Sutherland returning. In a deleted scene from that film, it’s revealed that Sutherland’s character is actually Nelson living under a different name, which would have sequelized the film and made it a tad more interesting. One has to suppose that those in charge of creating that film decided that it would either be confusing or unnecessary for audiences, when actuality, the film itself was.
