About this deal

W.II veteran to hit-man for the Bufalino crime family and his alleged assassination of his close friend Jimmy Hoffa. Independently owned and operated publications like Slant have been hit hard in recent years, but we’re committed to keeping our content free and accessible—meaning no paywalls or fees. Though I could look past a lot of them there are issues around the effects in the end product, yet despite that I still found it a fascinating look into not only the technology but the art that went behind it.

The Irishman Review :: Criterion Forum

To Sheeran, Hoffa is like a king with his head in the clouds, or a spouse who just won’t listen to reason. When the men are unloading the weapons from the US Army truck, two men can be seen carrying a box of rifles labeled "M-16" but the US Army didn't start getting M-16 rifles until 1964 which would have been three years after the Bay of Pigs Invasion that took place in 1961. Would a 4K UHD Dolby Vision disc outclass this Criterion transfer and expose more pronounced differences?Quiet elegance prevails, yet moments of visceral, unapologetic brutality disrupt the calm and succinctly capsulize the dog-eat-dog world in which we live.

On the flip side, Pesci plays a diminutive man who tries to remain invisible, and he easily steals the film with an understated, wonderfully nuanced, utterly revelatory performance that's the antithesis of his loudmouth, fast-talking, over-the-top work in both GoodFellas and Casino. The notes state that digital cameras were used where de-aging effects were applied, but even then there is a nice photographic look to the image most of the time.Though The Irishman audio track won't tax your system, it supplies marvelous atmosphere and enhances this movie's quiet power and nostalgic mood. It’s pretty by the numbers for what it is, touching on how the book was passed around and how the project gestated for years and years before finally filming. As an old man, Frank thinks back about his time as a criminal and killer and his role in Hoffa's disappearance in July 1975. Sheeran shares details about the life of a hitman and the profession's dos and don'ts, while Hoffa describes himself as an "average, ordinary human being," classifies life as "a jungle," states his definition of ethics, and airs his beefs with U. Then there’s the recurring superimposed text that notes the eventual date and manner of death of a number of peripheral characters, even as they’re standing flush before us.

Criterion also includes a 5-minute episode from a New York Times online series, Anatomy of a Scene, which features Scorsese talking over the Frank Sheeran appreciation night sequence, explaining the decisions behind the framing and general flow of the sequence (he also went out of his way to get Harvey Keitel and Pacino in a shot together just because they had never been in a scene together before). Not many actors can carry a 209-minute movie, but De Niro proves he's more than up to such a Herculean task.Continuing their deal with Netflix, The Criterion Collection presents Martin Scorsese’s The Irishman on Blu-ray, delivering the film in its original aspect ratio of 1.
