That said, I did find this book informative and interesting, and Stowe's love for the ocean shines. In that way, this book is highly successful. I walked away from it with a greater admiration for the ocean than I had going in.

One of the future Nobel laureate’s earliest poetry collections, this explores the transition from childhood into adolescence, family ties, heritage, love, loss and the passage of time through vivid and occasionally visceral imagery from the natural world; all shaped by his upbringing in rural Ireland and his family’s reliance on the land. The ink of the sea and the sky merged in a midnight abyss, and it was hard to tell whether we were sailing through water or air. His performances in movies like The Big Boss and Fist of Fury are responsible for launching the kung fu craze of the 1970s and the 1980s. And thanks to Lee, people everywhere developed stronger interests in kung fu, and martial arts movies became bigger than ever. Even though Lee died during the filming of his fifth and final film - Game of Death - in 1973, he was able to change the martial arts movie industry forever. The vast, ever-changing beauty of the ocean and its creatures’ epic lives have always called to me. They have called as well to Hannah Stowe, a writer who shares with us her response to that calling in her distinctly wet and salty new coming-of-age memoir. a b Ziwei, Puah (April 5, 2021). To be at home in the ocean as well as on it and along its shores seems hard to find sometimes; I am definitely not at home on it, but those who are aren’t always into swimming in it or exploring shores and the life that flourishes all those areas. This book covers all of the areas with a focus, like whales or albatross, and some informative science and wonder along with her memoir. The publisher said: “The book will take the form of a journey by boat, as Stowe sails around the South China Sea in the wake of one of the most audacious of these pioneering women: Zhèng Yī Sǎo, the world’s most successful pirate. Weaving together the story of Stowe’s modern-day voyage with the stories of Zhèng Yī Sǎo and other notable female sailors of the past, She, The Sea will be an enthralling celebration of women who have defied the odds to rule the waves.” A sensuous book, more felt than described, more described than explained, more painted than part memoir, part journal and. . . . part natural mystery tour."― Carl Safina, The New York Times Book Review A book to sweep you away from the shore, into a wild world of water, whale, storm, and starlight― to experience what it’s like to sail for weeks at a time with life set to a new rhythm. As a young girl, Hannah Stowe was raised at the tide’s edge on the Pembrokeshire coast of Wales, falling asleep to the sweep of the lighthouse beam. Now in her midtwenties, working as a marine biologist and sailor, Stowe draws on her professional experiences sailing tens of thousands of miles in the North Sea, North Atlantic, Mediterranean, Celtic Sea, and the Caribbean to explore the human relationship with wild waters. Why is it, she asks, that she and so many others have been drawn to life at sea―and what might the water around us be able to teach us?
