About this deal

Washington. National Gallery of Art. "The New Painting: Impressionism 1874–1886," January 17–April 6, 1986, no. 123 (as "Bouquet de soleils"). If you’ve planted artichokes to harvest and eat, then there’s no need to let the plants go to flower. In fact, you should avoid allowing them to bloom at all. Moscow. State Pushkin Museum. "Claude Monet," November 26, 2001–February 10, 2002, no. 19 (as "Bouquet de soleils"). Shôko Kobayashi in Van Gogh and Flowers. Ed. Shôko Kobayashi. Bring a small pot of water to the boil and place the artichokes in the water, cook for five minutes or until soft. Remove from the water, and when cool slice in half. In a small pan melt the butter with the olive oil. Place the sage in the pan when butter is melted. Add the drained, cooled, halved artichokes and cook in the butter and sage until golden. When golden on all sides, add a tablespoon of white wine (or water) and the garlic in the pan and stir for 30 seconds. Season with salt and pepper, and serve immediately with fresh crusty bread.

Gary Tinterow et al. The Metropolitan Museum of Art. Vol. 8, Modern Europe. New York, 1987, pp. 8, 33, colorpl. 17. While most people use Artichoke as food, it blooms into a magnificent purple flower when not harvested on time. Interestingly, Artichokes do not germinate true (identical to the parent) to the seed. They are best grown from dormant roots or rooting shoots. Generally, Artichokes, as cut flowers or even dried, give exciting texture and color to bouquets and floral arrangements. According to an article from the University of Catania, Italy, when in bloom, the large purple thistle-like flower of the Artichoke attracts honey bees, bumbles bees and native bees. Bees landing on the Artichoke flower helps pollination.

An artichoke plant can produce anywhere from 4 to 6 flower buds during its first season. Once the plant gets more established, it can produce many more. Margaretta M. Salinger. New York. The Metropolitan Museum of Art. "Public Parks, Private Gardens: Paris to Provence," March 12–July 29, 2018, unnumbered cat.Rub the base of the artichoke with lemon, where the leaves have been removed, to prevent them browning. Cut off the stem of the artichoke so there is about 5cm left attached to the bulb. With a vegetable peeler, peel the remaining stem until you reach the light green core. Rub immediately with lemon. Place the artichoke in a cold bowl of acidulated water (lemon or vinegar) and weigh the artichoke down so it is fully submerged. Repeat until you have done all of your artichokes.
