About this deal
The one common thing about all hydrangeas is a need for a sheltered position out of the wind. Leaves scorch horribly in windy gardens and plants fail to do well. They also prefer some shade - even the drought-tolerant American species. The climbers are very good in shade. Hydrangeas do well under trees - particularly H. paniculata. Hydrangeas are popular plants which are widely available from both garden centres and online suppliers. They are also available from many non-specialist suppliers such assupermarkets. Be aware though, buying hydrangeas from supermarkets etc. maywell result in the variety not being that named on the label.
Hydrangeas do best in moist soil and can wilt in hot weather, so keep well-watered during hot spells in summer. If you should need to move your shrub for any reason this should be done in autumn or winter when the plant is dormant. Try to make sure you get the whole rootball and replant immediately to avoid stress to the plant. Maintenance
Plant Overview
A floppy stemmed, cream starry double that’s fantastic in a container, but too brittle for most places in the garden.
Hydrangea quercifolia has leaves shaped like oak leaves. They also have brilliant autumn foliage. The flowers are white, though some age to a pinkish hue. The blooms are cone-shaped and can be single or double. This is an American variety and can withstand drought better than the Asian types. It’s better however to apply sulphur to the soil to reduce the pH and increase its acidity,” adds Roy. The first pink arborescens developed by Dr Tom Ranney at North Carolina State University's Mountain Horticultural Crops Research Station. In this range a given variety’s flowers’ hues will stay true to type and not veer toward either red-pink or blue.
