There are no queues! Well, at least when I’ve seen the swings during my half-year in Gili T, there have been no queues. Maybe because I was in Gili Trawangan during the low season or maybe because there are more swings now, but unlike in the past and past stories I have heard and read, I personally didn’t see any big queues which helps the experience of getting a photo on the swings more fun and less commercial I think. What a wonderful way to end the Series ! Loved, loved, loved Sunset Swing. Beautifully wrapped up, amongst all the bloodshed and gore, the nightmares, the Mafia, the Sunset Strip, the white triangle, the FBN, the CIA, the drugs and everything else.

The City Blues Quartet started in New Orleans in 1919, took in Chicago in the 20s, New York in the 40s, now we’re in Los Angeles in the 60s and each time and place has been depicted vividly and atmospherically, incorporating real characters and events. I’ve loved these books and am sorry this is the final one, but I enjoyed very much catching up with those characters I was drawn to during the series. Most astonishing of all is that Ray Celestin is English - this sounds so authentically American. I can’t help but wonder if he really will be able to walk away from this world or whether Kerry may live to see another day, I really hope that she might. There is only one port and pier in Bali where the boat from Bali to Gili Islandsruns and that’s from Padang Bai in the North.

There is a fourth POV that occurs sparingly, that of Louis Armstrong. I am always hesitant when a ‘real’ person is placed in a fictional context, particularly when the story contains imaginary thoughts and actions of that ‘real’ person. The author handled this fairly well, not steering far from known facts about Armstrong, who plays a very minor role in the plot. Completing his American crime quartet, Ray Celestin’s Sunset Swing is a stunning novel of conspiracy, murder and madness, an unforgettable portrait of a city on the edge. The other option is to simply enjoy the view of the beach and walk around the island. If you were to walk all the way around Gili T it would take you 2-3hours, which might be a lovely activity for one of your days on the island. If you are simply wanting to get to the sunset swings, if you leave the Gili T harbour and walk with the sea on your left it will take around 20-30 minutes to walk to the swings. She looked over the crowd, saw how they leaned forwards in their seats, some with grins, some with their eyes closed, some with their eyes like pins that caught the light. Those standing around the edges of the room tapped their feet and nodded to the rhythm as it twitched and throbbed. There is a big gap between the next set swings on Gili T between The Exile Bar andVilla Ombak Sunset Gili Trawangan. Also returning is Ida's old friend Louis Armstrong, the legendary trumpeter. He's near the end of his life and has an opportunity to record one more hit song, which plays into the novel's theme. Louis also helps Ida with her investigation by providing some inside Hollywood tips, and there's a great scene with Louis and doomed jazz hotshot Chet Baker. Luxury – One of the most beautiful accommodations on the island is Villa Ombak. Located on the port side of the island this place is easily accessible to the beach, ferry and plenty of bars and restaurants.

Getting the right lighting!Although sunset is a great time to get photos on the sunset Gili T swings, remember that the photo will be quite dark and you need to get the timing right. I took most of my photos in the afternoon on the sunset side which was good as the beach was really quiet however the sun was right above me and it wasn’t quite ‘golden hour’ which is why the quality of my photos is quite low. In hindsight, it would have been better to get these in the morning when the sun was on the other side of the island.After a moment, he looked up at the audience as if noticing them for the first time, cleared his throat. Louis Armstrong has been such a constant in the entire series and I so loved it - I often looked forward to reading his segments. From New Orleans, to Chicago, to New York and finally to Los Angeles. What a brilliant storyline! Interwoven is the story of his friend, Ida who starts as a detective for the Pinkertons and finally having her own agency. Ida and Louis' friendship is to be cherished.

As you may be aware, Bali is one of the most photogenic places in the world, so you definitely don’t want to forget your camera. No matter where we go in the world, we always ensure our camera bag is fully topped up. Ombak Sunset says it is the best ocean swing in the world, and although it is a nice one I’d say some of the other swings on Gili T are better!
